An Air France plane carrying 228 people from Brazil to France has vanished over the Atlantic after flying into turbulence, airline officials say.

The Airbus sent an automatic message at 0214 GMT, four hours after leaving Rio de Janeiro, reporting a short circuit. It may have been damaged by lightning.
It was well over the ocean when it was lost, making Brazilian and French search planes' task more difficult.
France's president said the chances of finding survivors were "very small".

"It is a catastrophe the likes of which Air France has never seen," Nicolas Sarkozy said after meeting relatives and friends of passengers at a crisis centre at Charles de Gaulle airport.
Earlier, Air France chief executive Pierre-Henri Gourgeon told reporters: "We are without a doubt faced with an air disaster."
He added: "The entire company is thinking of the families and shares their pain."
Flight AF 447 left Rio at 1900 local time (2200 GMT) on Sunday. It had 216 passengers and 12 crew on board, including three pilots. The passengers included one infant, seven children, 82 women and 126 men.

Space shuttle Atlantis and its crew landed at 11:39 a.m. EDT Sunday at Edwards Air Force Base in California, completing the final servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope. Atlantis' astronauts conducted five successful spacewalks during their STS-125 flight to enhance and extend the life of the orbiting observatory.

Atlantis' 13-day mission of approximately 5.3 million miles rejuvenated Hubble with state-of-the-art science instruments designed to improve the telescope's discovery capabilities by as much as 70 times, while extending its lifetime through at least 2014.

Soviet copy of the US Space Shuttle. Unlike the Shuttle, the main engines were not mounted on Buran and were not reused. Representing a huge leap in Soviet space technology and project management - it involved the work of 1206 subcontractors and 100 government ministries. Buran flew only once in 1988. The cost of Buran - 14.5 billion rubles, a significant part of the effort to maintain strategic and technical parity with the United States - contributed to the collapse of the Soviet system and the demise of the spacecraft.

1988 November 15. Unmanned test of Soviet shuttle. Landed November 15, 1988 06:25 GMT. Buran was first moved to the launch pad on 23 October 1988. The launch commission met on 26 October 1988 and set 29 October 06:23 Moscow time for the first flight of the first Buran orbiter (Flight 1K1). 51 seconds before the launch, when control of the countdown switched to automated systems, a software problem led the computer program to abort the lift-off. The problem was found to be due to late separation of a gyro update umbilical. The software problem was rectified and the next attempt was set for 15 November at 06:00 (03:00 GMT). Came the morning, the weather was snow flurries with 20 m/s winds. Launch abort criteria were 15 m/s. The launch director decided to press ahead anyway.

After 12 years of development everything went perfectly. Buran, with a mass of 79.4 tonnes, separated from the Block Ts core and entered a temporary orbit with a perigee of -11.2 km and apogee of 154.2 km. At apogee Burn executed a 66.6 m/s manoeuvre and entered a 251 km x 263 km orbit of the earth. In the payload bay was the 7150 kg module 37KB s/n 37071. The 37KB modules, similar to the Kvant module of the Mir space station, were to be standard on the early Buran flights. 140 minutes into the flight retrofire was accomplished with a total delta-v of 175 m/s. 206 minutes after launch, accompanied by Igor Volk in a MiG-25 chase plane, Buran touched down at 260 km/hr in a 17 m/s crosswind at the Jubilee runway, with a 1620 m landing rollout. The completely automatic launch, orbital manoeuvre, deorbit, and precision landing of an airliner-sized spaceplane on its very first flight was an unprecedented accomplishment of which the Soviets were justifiably proud. It completely vindicated the years of exhaustive ground and flight test that had debugged the systems before they flew.

But this triumph was also the last hurrah. Buran would never fly again. The Soviet Union was crumbling, and the ambitious plans to use Buran to build an orbiting defense shield, to renew the ozone layer, dispose of nuclear waste, illuminate polar cities, colonize the moon and Mars, were not to be. Although never officially cancelled, funding dried up and completely disappeared from the government's budget after 1993.

Originally three flight orbiters were to be built, but this was increased to 5 in 1983. Structurally the first three orbiters were essentially completed, while the extra two remained unbuilt except for the engine units The final Buran test flight plan at the beginning of 1989 was as follows:

Flight 2 (2K1) - fourth quarter 1991 - first flight of second orbiter, one to two days unmanned, with 37KB s/n 37071.

Flight 3 (2K2) - first or second quarter 1992 - second orbiter, seven to eight day unmanned flight with payload 37KB s/n 37271. The orbiter would open the payload bay doors, operate the manipulator arm, dock with Mir, and return to earth.

Flight 4 (1K2) - 1993 - unmanned, second flight of first orbiter, 15-20 days with 37KB s/n 37270

Flight 5 (3K1) - 1994 or 1995 - first flight of third orbiter. First manned flight; the third orbiter was the first outfitted with life support systems and ejection seats. Two cosmonauts would deliver the 37KBI module to Mir, using the Buran manipulator arm to dock it to the station's Kristal module.

According to NPD, RIM's consumer smartphone marketshare increased 15 percent during the first quarter of 2009, aided by an aggressive "buy one, get one" promotion by Verizon Wireless. For the quarter, RIM accounted for nearly 50 percent of the smartphone market, and Apple's and Palm's shares of the markets both shrunk by 10 percent as both companies ramp up to new product launches.

Overall, smartphones represented 23 percent of all mobile handset sales during the quarter. "Verizon Wireless's aggressive marketing of the BlackBerry Storm and its buy-one-get-one BlackBerry promotion to its large customer base contributed to RIM capturing three of the top five positions," said NPD director of industry analysis Ross Rubin, in a statement. "The more familiar, and less expensive, Curve benefited from these giveaways and was able to leapfrog the iPhone, due to its broader availability on the four major U.S. national carriers."

AT&T has launched the Nokia E71x smartphone, offering a sleek design, a QWERTY keyboard, assisted GPS and an integrated camera for just $99 with a two-year contract.

The E71x runs Symbian S60 3.2, and sports a 2.4-inch 320 by 240-pixel display, a 3.2 megapixel camera, assisted GPS, and both EDGE and 3G data capabilities—the phone can also tap into Wi-Fi networks, and also integrates with corporate email systems from IBM and Microsoft. The E71x can also handle media, including audio (MP3, WMA, AAC, and more), video (MP4, H.263, MPEG-4, etc.), and comes with a full HTML Web browser—and, unlike the iPhone, the E71x comes with Flash Lite, so it can handle some Web-based Flash content. The E71x can also top into XM RAdio and AT&T mobile video services; users can also access AT&T's branded turn-by-turn navigation service for directions and mapping information. The E71x has 120 MB of onboard memory and a microSD expansion slot, USB 2.0 connectivity, and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and Stereo A2DP.

The E71x may be the start of a new smartphone push for Nokia in the United States market: although Nokia smartphones and Internet-enabled devices are available in the U.S., Nokia has largely been offering the devices directly to consumers without going through a carrier partner…which means they routinely sell for over $500. Although Nokia is the world's largest handset maker, this strategy has put it distinctly behind the likes of Apple and RIM in the U.S. smartphone market. The E71x—marketed with partner AT&T—may be the start of a new push by Nokia to target smartphone products directly at the U.S. marketplace.

The spokesperson declined to discuss what devices the executives discussed, or when they might hit the market, but several media outlets have reported that Apple is talking with Verizon about carrying an iPhone on its network. "It makes sense for Apple to spread the love to Verizon and it makes sense for Verizon to have iPhone and it makes sense for AT&T to make sure that doesn't happen," said Roger Entner, the head of telecom research at Nielsen. "The winner is Apple either way," he said. Adding Verizon as a carrier could more than double Apple's current addressable market; AT&T has about 78.2 million wireless customers, while Verizon has 86.6 million, according to their most recent quarterly reports.

But AT&T, which had 1.6 million new iPhone activations in the first quarter this year, is expected to fight tooth and nail to keep its iPhone exclusivity. AT&T already sells iPhone for as little as $199 after paying a huge subsidy to Apple to boost sales. The iPhone has helped boost AT&T's subscriber numbers and data service revenue in a slowing market, where most people already have mobiles. Apple has said it has little interest in offering a phone for Verizon's Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network, which is available in much fewer countries than the rival GSM standard AT&T uses. "Verizon is on CDMA and we chose from the beginning of the iPhone to focus on one phone for the whole of the world," Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook said on Apple's quarterly earnings conference call last week. "And when you do that, you really go down the GSM route."

However, Verizon Wireless plans this year to start building a new network based on LTE, an emerging high-speed wireless technology that is expected to be eventually widely adopted by other operators around the world.

Sporty Dodge Circuit will be the Chrysler's First Electric Car

While General Motors has focused its green vehicle efforts on the Chevy Volt, Chrysler has shown no less than five electric and extended-range electric cars on the auto show circuit this year. Electric versions of the Jeep Wrangler and Patriot SUVs and the Chrysler Town & Country minivan have made the rounds, alongside a concept midsize sedan called the 200C and a sporty two-seat electric car known as the Dodge Circuit.

The automaker has been telling the press for months that it planned to build one of the cars in 2010, but has stayed silent on which car would see production. Now we have our answer. CNN Money reports, "Chrysler's first electric car, set to be introduced late next year around the same time as General Motors' Chevrolet Volt, will be a sports car with a zero-to-60 time of under five seconds and a top speed of 120 miles per hour." The Dodge Circuit will be released as a 2011 model. If Chrysler survives, the Circuit may just be the first of many. CNN reports, "Following that...will come electric-powered cars, SUVs and crossovers, some based on Fiat vehicles, according to the ‘viability plan' Chrysler submitted to the Treasury Department." PC Magazine adds, "No price range has been given yet. But that design," along with the performance figures Chrysler has quoted for the vehicle, "would put Chrysler's car in a virtual dead heat with the Tesla Roadster. Chrysler is even sourcing the chassis from Lotus, the same company that provided the platform design for Tesla's two-seat sports car."

Mazda has recalled 25,000 if its brand-new 2010 Mazda3 sedans to correct a wiring defect that could prevent the engine from starting. In a defect notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Mazda explains, "A clearance between the engine harness and the housing of the starter motor may be insufficient. Due to this, the covering of the harness may be damaged through vibration during operation, possibly causing a short-circuit between certain harness wires and the starter housing. A short-circuit can result in engine

control malfunction and/or poor shift quality." In an extreme situation, "The main fuse may blow out, causing the engine to stall and inability of restart, increasing the risk of a crash." Mazda dealers will inspect affected vehicles, and "add a protector clip on the affected section of the harness. If necessary, the harness will be repaired." Dealers will begin contacting owners in early May, but those who wish to make their own repair arrangements . Ghost Model Name for Least Expensive car is Rolls Royce Resurrects

Rolls Royce used the Shanghai Auto Show this week to officially announce plans to build a new, less expensive (by Rolls Royce standards) model, which appears identical to the 200EX concept that made its appearance at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Motor Trend reports, "The name of the new model will be the Rolls-Royce Ghost, resurrecting an apparition-themed moniker that first appeared on a Rolls-Royce more than 100 years ago."

Automobile Magazine explains, "The Rolls-Royce Ghost name is meant to evoke the grandeur of the original Ghost model. It was produced between 1906 and 1925 and was immediately recognizable as a Rolls. In total, 7876 of the original Rolls-Royce Ghosts were produced."

Rolls expects to build 1,000 examples of the new edition. Car and Driver reports, "It will feature a near-600-hp, turbocharged, 6.6-liter V-12 mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission," and shares some of its components with the BMW 7-Series sedan. The model "will slot below the current Phantom range and gives Rolls-Royce a more attainable model to compete against the Bentley Continental Flying Spur, as well as the upcoming 2010 Aston Martin Rapide. The Continental lineup also includes GT coupe and GTC convertible versions, and we expect two-door and droptop iterations of the Ghost to launch after the sedan."

Bluetooth 3.0 is finally official. As we mentioned a few weeks ago, Tuesday was the day the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (Bluetooth SIG) would officially adopt the Bluetooth 3.0+High Speed specification. As a reminder, in devices that have both Bluetooth 3.0 and WiFi, Bluetooth will be used to pair the two, but actual data transfer will take place over WiFi via an ad-hoc WiFi connection. This is especially useful when moving large files like photos, video, and more. The new spec also addresses energy savings with built-in power controls that will help conserve battery life.

Bluetooth 3.0 will be backwards compatible, and chip makers like Atheros and Broadcom are already working on making the hardware for it. Consumer products with Bluetooth 3.0 are expected in around 9 to 12 months.
